According to Movies Hacker is a geek with the glow of several computer monitors that surround them. A code magician, able to write complex security-bypassing algorithms at the drop of a hat that can grant them access to eve the securest of computer networks,even the "database mainframe" As technically gifted as they are morally suspect, they're trained in several languages, all the programming variety, and know everything there is to know about the complex, technical world of computing.

1. Hacker is actually a good term
Hacker is simply meant some one who can create, modify and improve computer/network software.
Some how the term morphed- thanks to our dear Hollywood movies to become synonymous with illegal internet activities.
This is turn as led the industry to segregate between the different type of hackers. Hackers who still embrace the positive meaning of the term are referred to as White Hat Hackers. for example security researchers who probe network security for weaknesses so they can report on their finding to the good guys.
Black Hat Hackers refers to those who compromise computer security for personal gain or malicious intent.
Grey Hat Hacking can be similar to Black Hat hacking but without any malicious intent.
2 Hacking is Illegal!!!!!!!!!!!
This leads us nicely to the next myth - that Hacking is illegal. It doesn't have to be. Even the white hat hackers are often haired to compromise their security in-order to find weakness. Companies even offers reward to peoples who can find weakness in their system. So Hacking in not illegal in all the sense, but it depend on how your perform it.
3. Hacking isn't hacking as you know it today
Many peoples who would describe themselves as computer hackers are indeed technical gifted computer programmers, with the increasingly effective security technologies used online, as well as the dawn of 'Unbreakable' encryption,cyber criminal are more frequently turning to social engineering techniques in order to gain access to things they shouldn't be accessing.
Social engineering in not technical. it means simple tricking some one to level, where they hand over the vital information such as passwords pins etc. to you. here in social engineering the hackers find the weakness in human not in computer.
4. Hacking is fast paced and exciting
when you watch a movie and saw a geek siting in front of computer monitor and typing frantically. and some "Alert messages on screen", "good guy trying to type faster that the bad", etc etc.....
OMG it's all FAKE.........
believe me none of these acts are real...
even the software used by hackers, majority of software are pretty boring. its doesn't need fast typing and it won't show any intruder alert. and it doesn't try to hack mainframe
5. Hackers are anti-social expert keyboard warriors
There are some peoples out there who pretty mach our imagination of a typical hacker. but that's to rare. Most are normal sociable people with normal jobs don't live in basement. for most, hacking ts trade even full time job for those who do it illegally, they still probably don't match up to the stereotypes we have in our head.
